One beautiful sunny spring day in May 2012, I affirmed that I wanted to run a marathon. Who knew adding one simple activity to my life would lead to such a transformational journey. The past two years have be a total surprise and has led me to places, people and opportunities I never foresaw for myself. Through running I adopted a new mindset, discovered a new way of being and a new purpose for my life.
Is it really about the running? What I do know is being committed to the sport, the training, and the blisters has taught me a lot about my physical and mental strength. And no matter how I feel before I run one, ten or thirty kilometres, I always feel different after.
C.S. Lewis said “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different …”. I feel that way about running. I run and/ or cross train everyday and I don’t feel on a daily basis that I’ve accomplished anything worth bragging about. But as the months pass and I look back at my calendar/ training schedule not only do I see what I’ve done, but I feel it. I feel the result of commitment and passion.
So let the countdown begin to my second marathon!
Have a goal you want to accomplish? My advice for you is simple: Take action! I’m proud of myself for taking the step and doing that which I thought I couldn’t do, and now people know me for that thing. When I started, I couldn’t run for more than 10 minutes and now I run for hours. If I can do it, so can you!
