Once a week I assume the role as a volunteer coach with a fabulous program called Start2Finish (http://start2finishonline.org/). This after school program not only focuses on empowering children to be roles models for change, but provides them with additional support in the areas of literacy and physical activity. Last Tuesday during clean up, one of the volunteers told me to do a burpee. Now for those of you not familiar with the term, I can assure you that a burpee it is not a ‘cute’ way of referring to a burp. “Oh honey, you burpeed again”. No. What I can assure you is that a burpee is anything but cute‒it is a full body exercise which instantly reminds you that your natural body weight is definitely a source that can kill you! Allow me to explain; you begin in the standing position, drop to a squat and put your hands on the ground. You then kick your feet back so you’re in a plank position, do a push up, kick your feet back in, stand tall with your arms extended above your head, jump (because its fun) and repeat! For those of you who are still confused, please refer to the photo below which illustrates a rough idea of the exercise. After completing my burpee, not only was I was scolded by the senior coach for my poor form, but she deemed my version of the exercise a cheat! Call it what you want, but my “cheat” version had me sweating, which to me means that I was burning some kind of calorie. Anyway, before I was able to catch my breath, I instantly found myself on the ground again as the coach was challenging me to do as many burpees as I could in a minute. There I am, surrounded by kids screaming my pitiful single digit results at the top of their lungs while the senior coach next to me (twice my age) is breaking the Olympic record. Sixty seconds later, I was out of breath, covered in God knows what from the school gym floor, sitting in a pool of pathetic sweat. The final count was somewhere in the high twenties for the coach and a solid seven for Laska. “Perfect”, I thought. “I got some kids gum on my hand and an ass-whooping. Didn’t I come here to volunteer”?! Long story short, I was recruited to join the Fitfluencial Burpee Challenge. Basically from January 27th until February 28th you have to do as many burpees as you can in order to reach a thousand. I think you’re suppose to calculate the total number you do in a minute, but I was encouraged to simply add up the total number I do per day in hopes to achieve the burpee goal. It works out to be roughly thirty burpees a day, so here I am squeezing in 5-10 burpees wherever I can in hopes to avoid doing them all at once. I have to say, at first I was less than enthusiastic about the idea, but now that I have the ‘proper’ form, things are looking up! The senior coach managed to recruit a few other volunteer coaches to join the challenge and through email, we share updates regarding how we managed to squeeze a few ‘burps’ in our day. If you’re looking for a fun challenge that requires nothing but your own body weight and a deadline, join us!
8km steady run tonight with my running group. I wonder if I can recruit any of them to join? Did I mention it is only -6C today?! Might have to break out the spring tights! 😉
